The Open Window - Quito Arantes, Pages 17/18 (Excerpt)

Day after day, Luciana was living in an absolutely anguish. She wished she could have news and know how things were running with her dear friend. Having no ways to be in touch with him, she only could wait and pray for his life.

Never giving up, as she had promised him, she would keep working hard to achieve her goals.
At long last, there was a notice informing the inhabitants of the village that the doctor would be back in a month time to resume with his duties.
Luciana felt an outbreak of joy. She couldn’t believe. She would have her friend again, by her side, to share with him her experiences. She missed those moments so much!
Immediately, she immersed herself in a state of complete happiness and ran to the fields. She wanted to make him a surprise. She picked up some wild flowers of the end of summer and made herself a very unusual and creative bunch. A small colourful bouquet of dried flowers: daisies, heathers and crocus.
As for Ermelinda, she was grateful for the affection the doctor dedicated to her granddaughter. While observing Luciana through the window, she was surprised to watch her among the fields looking for flowers and, smiled.
Driving his old, but well preserved Land Rover, the doctor arrived around 2pm. At distance, he could recognise Luciana wearing a blue dress and her long brown hair blowing in the wind. She still looked a fragile child, smiling and looking for warmth. With tenderness, he kissed her on her brow and deeply moved by her gesture he couldn’t help a teardrop rolling down his face.
